The Most Beautiful Sections of China's Great Wall

Having lived in Beijing for almost 12 years, I've had plenty of time to travel widely in China.

And I have to say, one of the most rewarding experiences has been exploring different sections of the Great Wall. It's not just *one* wall, but a series of fortifications built over centuries, each with its own unique character and breathtaking views.

Of course, many visitors flock to the Badaling section, and while it's historically significant and relatively accessible, it can get incredibly crowded. If you're looking for something a bit more off the beaten path, and dare I say, more *beautiful*, then you've come to the right place!

Mutianyu, for instance, offers a fantastic balance of restored sections and stunning scenery. The cable car makes it easier to reach the higher points, and the toboggan run down is a fun way to end your visit! The surrounding mountains are lush and green, providing a spectacular backdrop.

For those seeking a more rugged and adventurous experience, Simatai is an excellent choice. It's less restored and a bit more challenging to hike, but the reward is unparalleled views, especially at sunset. The watchtowers are particularly dramatic here, clinging precariously to the mountain ridges.

And finally, if you're truly intrepid, consider a visit to the Jiankou section. This is a completely unrestored section, and hiking it requires a good level of fitness and a sense of adventure. However, the wild and untamed beauty is simply unmatched. Be sure to hire a local guide though, as some parts can be quite dangerous!

No matter which section you choose, visiting the Great Wall of China is an unforgettable experience. Just remember to bring comfortable shoes, plenty of water, and your camera!
