Things got a little spicy on Twitter recently when California Governor Gavin Newsom's press team responded to a critical tweet from Steven Cheung, a former White House Communications Director under the Trump administration. It all started with a claim that Newsom was avoiding questions from the press – a claim that quickly unraveled.

Cheung's original tweet, which included some colorful language, alleged that Governor Newsom was “too chicken” to face the press after a speech addressing congressional redistricting efforts. This speech aimed to counter similar moves by Republicans in states like Texas. The only problem? Newsom did take questions from reporters.

Less than fifteen minutes after Cheung's initial tweet, Newsom's press office responded directly. Their reply was short, sweet, and to the point: "Questions are streamed here you idiot," followed by a link to the Q&A session where Newsom answered nine questions from various reporters. Ouch!

The Newsom team didn't stop there. They followed up with another tweet, this time directed at the public, calling Cheung an "incompetent Trump staffer" who "doesn't know how to use his computer." This tweet even seemed to adopt former President Trump's characteristic tone, adding the word "SAD!" at the end.

This incident highlights an ongoing trend: Newsom's press team has been known to imitate Trump's style in their online communications. During the actual Q&A, Newsom addressed a question about this very tactic. He suggested his approach served as a "wake-up call," encouraging people to scrutinize the kind of rhetoric and messaging that gained popularity during Trump's time in office.

Newsom’s team has been actively trying to bring attention to the purpose of his speech: announcing a special election in November concerning proposed new maps to potentially counteract GOP-leaning redistricting in states with Republican leadership.

Newsom stated that if states like Texas, Florida, and Indiana were to abandon their “unprecedented, mid-decade, hyper-partisan gerrymander,” California would no longer pursue its redistricting initiative. However, currently, there are no indicators that Republicans plan to reverse course. So, the political back-and-forth continues!
