California Governor Gavin Newsom has voiced strong opposition to a reported White House plan involving a rather unusual military demonstration. The plan, purportedly part of the 250th anniversary celebrations for the Marine Corps, has drawn sharp criticism for its potential impact on daily life and its perceived misplacement of priorities.

According to reports, the proposed event could feature Navy warships firing live ordnance over Interstate 5 (I-5) and onto Camp Pendleton. The Los Angeles Times, citing information from Newsom's office, revealed details suggesting a possible closure of the freeway, a major transportation artery for Southern California. MeidasTouch also reported details of the proposed event.

The potential closure of I-5, which sees over 80,000 travelers daily, could cause significant disruption. Newsom took to social media platform X to express his disapproval. “Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military,” Newsom posted . “PUT ASIDE YOUR VANITY PARADE AND PAY OUR TROOPS INSTEAD.”

Newsom’s office also released a statement calling the proposed demonstration an "absurd show of force" and questioning its necessity, particularly during a government shutdown when military members face financial uncertainties.

While details remain somewhat unclear, the Marine Corps issued a statement indicating a "live-fire amphibious capabilities demonstration" at Camp Pendleton, but assured that no public highways or transportation routes would be closed. A detailed risk assessment has reportedly been conducted.

The event, named "Sea to Shore—A Review of Amphibious Strength," is expected to be attended by Vice President JD Vance. However, a spokesperson for the Vice President dismissed reports of a freeway closure as "fake news," characterizing the event as a routine "training exercise."

A spokesperson for Newsom reinforced the Governor's stance, stating that California respects its Marines but believes this particular event is not the appropriate way to honor them. They urged the White House to prioritize paying the military and addressing economic concerns rather than focusing on "pompous displays of power." The spokesperson also criticized the lack of coordination and communication from the federal government.

The California Department of Transportation is reportedly preparing for potential closures on I-5, indicating some level of anticipation for the proposed demonstration. Drivers are advised to expect potential delays in Southern California if the federal government requests a freeway closure.

The situation continues to develop, with officials on both sides offering differing accounts. Stay tuned for further updates as they become available.
