The question of whether Donald Trump might seek a third term as President of the United States is once again making headlines. Author Michael Wolff, known for his in-depth analyses of the Trump administration, has suggested that it's a distinct possibility, and even that the Supreme Court could play a role in making it happen. Could we see a Trump 2028 campaign?

In an appearance on Inside Trump’s Head, a podcast by The Daily Beast, Wolff discussed Trump's actions since leaving office, arguing they appear designed to secure future electoral victories. He pointed to what he sees as authoritarian tendencies, including targeting political opponents, exerting control over institutions, and focusing on key states. He argues this creates a situation where Trump *needs* to remain in power to avoid potential repercussions.

“The thing about an authoritarian… you can go down the list here of Donald Trump targeting—specifically targeting—his political opponents, Donald Trump exerting ever more control over courts, media, universities, businesses, of him explicitly targeting blue state governors and legislatures, and finally, locking in the mechanisms which might ensure continued electoral success,” Wolff stated.

Could the Supreme Court Pave the Way?

Wolff also raised concerns about a potential Supreme Court ruling concerning the Voting Rights Act. He suggests that if the court weakens the Act, it could allow Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts, potentially giving the GOP a significant advantage in future elections. This shift in power could embolden Trump to challenge the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms.

The White House, when asked for comment by The Daily Beast, responded with a photo of Trump meeting with lawmakers, conspicuously displaying "Trump 2028" hats. This seemingly playful gesture could be interpreted as a deliberate hint at future political ambitions. It definitely gets you thinking about the future of US politics!

Trump's History of Hinting at a Third Term

It's worth noting that this isn't the first time Trump has alluded to serving longer than the constitutional limit. He's made comments about serving "three times or four times" and has even sold "Trump 2028" merchandise. While some might dismiss these as jokes, others see them as signs of a more serious intention. A few Republicans have even introduced legislation to try and clear the way for a third term.

One alternative scenario that experts suggest is Trump running as a VP and then assuming the presidency after the elected President steps down. This bypasses the 22nd amendment that prevents anyone from being *elected* to a third term, but not from *serving* a third term.

The discussion raises critical questions about the future of American democracy and the potential for unprecedented challenges to constitutional norms. What do you think? Could we see a Donald Trump third term?
