Tarantino Finally Reveals Why He Scrapped ‘The Movie Critic’
For years, fans have eagerly awaited Quentin Tarantino's tenth and supposedly final film. After 2019’s critically acclaimed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the anticipation was palpable. The project rumored to be his swan song? The Movie Critic.
But then, surprise! In April of last year, the project was abruptly canceled during pre-production, leaving many wondering why. Speculation ran rampant, with theories ranging from creative differences to legacy anxieties. But Tarantino himself has finally set the record straight.
So, what's the real reason? It turns out, it’s surprisingly simple. According to Tarantino, in a recent interview with The Church of Tarantino podcast, The Movie Critic was just too similar to his previous work, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“It was too much like the last one,” Tarantino explained. Both films were set in Los Angeles during the New Hollywood era, a period Tarantino clearly has a deep affection for, but one he felt he had already explored extensively. "I wasn’t really excited about dramatizing what I wrote when I was in pre-production. There was nothing to figure out. I already kind of knew, more or less, how to turn L.A. into an older time.”
While The Movie Critic may be on hold, that doesn't mean Tarantino is slowing down. He hinted that he might revisit the script in the future, but for now, he’s focusing on other exciting projects. This includes writing the script for The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood directed by David Fincher, which will follow Brad Pitt's beloved character.
But that's not all! Tarantino is also venturing into the world of theater, planning a play set to debut in London’s West End. So, while we might have to wait a little longer for his tenth film, it sounds like Tarantino is keeping busy and continuing to push his creative boundaries.
And for those who think he's being overly cautious about his film legacy? Tarantino has a message for you: "It’s a little crazy to listen to podcasts and hear all these amateur psychiatrists psychoanalyze as if they f---ing know what they’re talking about...I’m not paralyzed with fear. Trust me.”
So, there you have it. The real reason The Movie Critic got scrapped. It wasn't fear of failure, but rather a desire to explore new and different creative avenues. We can't wait to see what Tarantino does next!
