Did the 'And Just Like That' Finale Miss the Mark? A Look at Season 2's Ending
The second season of And Just Like That has come to a close, and while there were moments of fashion, friendship, and familiar faces, the finale left some viewers feeling a little…underwhelmed. Was it a fitting end to the season, or did it stumble on what makes the Sex and the City universe so special?
A Thanksgiving Apart? The Finale's Disconnect
Remember the promo photo for Season 2, reminiscent of the "Last Supper," with Carrie at the center? It hinted at a season of close connections and shared experiences. Ironically, the finale took place on Thanksgiving, but instead of a heartwarming gathering of the entire cast, we got a series of disconnected moments. Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte – the core trio – didn't even share a single scene together!
Carrie bids farewell to Miranda, caught up in a romantic moment, and returns to her spacious Gramercy Park apartment. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with Carrie enjoying her own company and dancing to Barry White, the fact that the three main characters didn't connect in this final episode feels like a missed opportunity.
We see Carrie interacting with Seema and LTW at a bridal fashion show. She also spends time with Miranda during Thanksgiving, and even Anthony gets a bit of screen time. But why couldn't the writers find a way to bring Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte together, even for a brief moment?
The Power of Female Friendship: Missing in Action?
The original Sex and the City series thrived on showcasing the powerful bonds of female friendship. Remember those iconic scenes of the four women (Samantha included!) walking arm-in-arm, laughing and sharing their lives? That sense of camaraderie and support is what resonated with so many viewers.
The original series ended with Carrie acknowledging that the most significant relationship is the one you have with yourself, but she also recognized the importance of her friendships. As Charlotte poignantly stated, "Maybe we can be each other's soulmates." The SATC universe, at its core, is about being there for your friends through thick and thin, and navigating the highs and lows of life together. Were these key elements missing from the finale?
The Importance of Connection
While it's perfectly acceptable for Carrie to be single at the end of the season, what was really needed was a moment of connection with her friends to remind us of what Sex and the City (and by extension, And Just Like That) is really about.
Carrie, despite her flaws, always strives to be a good friend. But her pie delivery tour in the finale felt more like a rushed obligation than a genuine act of care. This leaves many questioning if the finale truly captured the heart and soul of what made the original series so beloved. Maybe next season will bring the girls back together again to rediscover the true meaning of friendship in the city. We can only hope!
