A Happy Ending at Last for Thomas Barrow in 'Downton Abbey'

We all love Downton Abbey for its stunning costumes, impressive estates, and of course, the captivating drama! It seems like every character, from the Crawley family to the dedicated staff, has faced their fair share of trials and tribulations throughout the series and films. And with such a large cast, that's definitely saying something!
But if there's one character whose journey has been particularly poignant, it's undoubtedly Thomas Barrow, played by Robert James-Collier. This closeted footman has struggled immensely with his identity, and for a long time, fans feared he was destined for a life of solitude.

Finally, in the newest installment, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Barrow gets the heartwarming conclusion he deserves! It's a beautiful and fitting end to his story.
(Spoiler Alert: If you haven't seen the film, proceed with caution!)
While Thomas Barrow might have started as a character many viewers disliked due to his scheming ways, he evolved into a fan favorite as we learned the driving force behind his actions: a desperate attempt to conceal his homosexuality. In the restrictive atmosphere of early 20th century England, being outed could have cost Barrow his career, or worse. He even endured the horrific experience of undergoing electroconvulsive therapy in an attempt to "cure" himself.
Downton Abbey has teased Barrow's happiness before, only to cruelly snatch it away. Remember the 2019 film where he discovered a secret gay community, only for a police raid to shatter his fleeting joy? Or in A New Era when he met actor Guy Dexter (Dominic West) and the possibility of love blossomed? Dexter offered Barrow a life-changing opportunity: to become his personal dresser in Hollywood and, privately, his lover.
Despite the glimmer of hope, fans were understandably wary, given Barrow's history. But I'm delighted to share that The Grand Finale delivers! Barrow is granted a happy ending akin to those of his heterosexual counterparts.
In The Grand Finale, we see Barrow flourishing in London with Dexter and their friend, the witty Noel Coward (played by Arty Froushan). Coward's new play is the talk of the town, and the film features Downton preparing for Coward's visit. We see Barrow, Dexter, and Coward enjoying each other's company, exchanging clever banter. Their dynamic is perhaps the closest Downton will ever get to depicting a romantic scene!

Perhaps the most touching moment for Barrow is when he's invited to dine with the Granthams. Even though he no longer works at Downton, he still considers himself a member of the servant class and initially has dinner with them. The surprise comes when he is invited to join Lord and Lady Grantham and their guests. Barrow is deeply moved by this gesture, and as he sits among those he served for so many years, he experiences a profound sense of belonging and accomplishment. It's a moment he never thought possible.
And there's more! During the end credits, we see Dexter and Barrow gazing lovingly at each other, Dexter having gifted Barrow a thoughtful present, sealing their blossoming romance and solidifying their place in the Downton Abbey story.

Of course, a kiss between Barrow and Dexter would have been incredibly satisfying. While their tenderest moment is relegated to a small frame during the end credits, it's still a significant step forward.
Considering the historical trend of portraying gay men in period films as suffering, lonely figures often met with tragic ends, it's a relief to see Downton Abbey offer a different narrative. While their love may be behind closed doors, it's still love and acceptance, and that's a powerful message.
A New Era offered Barrow hope, but The Grand Finale provides him with the richly deserved happy ending we've all been waiting for. It's a beautiful conclusion to a compelling character arc in the world of Downton Abbey, and a storyline that resonates deeply with audiences today. If you're a fan of period dramas, British television, or simply love a good story about overcoming adversity and finding happiness, then this film is a must-see!
