The Most Beautiful Sections of China's Great Wall

Having lived in Beijing for almost 12 years, I've had plenty of time to travel widely in China.

Over those years, I've explored several sections of the Great Wall, and I've developed some clear favourites. Deciding on the "most beautiful" is always subjective, but I can offer some insights based on my personal experiences and observations.

Firstly, you need to consider what you mean by 'beautiful'. Are you interested in stunning scenery with the wall snaking across rugged mountains? Or do you prefer a more historically-rich section, even if it means more crowds?

One of my favourites is Jinshanling. While it can get busy, the sheer scale of the wall snaking through the hills, coupled with the dramatic landscape, is truly breathtaking. I especially recommend going at sunrise or sunset, the colours are simply phenomenal!

Another strong contender is the Mutianyu section. It's arguably more tourist-friendly, with cable cars available to ascend and descend (and even toboggan runs!), but that doesn't detract from its beauty. The restored sections are impeccably maintained, providing a clear sense of what the wall would have looked like in its prime.

And finally, for a more adventurous experience, consider a hike on the Simatai section. It's wilder, less restored, and offers a more challenging but rewarding experience. Just be sure to check access requirements before you go, as it can be restricted at times.

Ultimately, the "most beautiful" section of the Great Wall depends on your personal preferences. But with its magnificent scale, imposing presence and sheer historical weight, any visit to the wall is guaranteed to be unforgettable.
